Golf's Greatest Holes - Series 2 (Portugal)

Following the success of Series 1, which featured the best the Emerald Isle had to offer, the dynamic duo are back on the fairways, and this time they've jumped on a plane to Portugal!

The latest Series, which premiered on Sky Sports Golf in April 2023, once again sees Paul and Chris using the award-winning Motocaddy M5 GPS and M7 REMOTE electric trolleys to navigate the fairways while the Pro-Series cart bag and versatile HydroFLEX stand bag keep their clubs safe and secure on famous courses including Vale do Lobo, Quinta Do Lago, San Lorenzo, Monte Rei and many more.

Featuring former Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley and co-host Chris Hollins playing 26 spectacular courses across Portugal, the seven-part Series will be broadcast to an audience of more than one billion households in 189 different countries over the next four years.

Motocaddy x GGH - Why the perfect partnership?

It's simple. A Motocaddy trolley is proven to make golf more enjoyable, so there's no better way to play Golf's Greatest Holes than with a Motocaddy trolley by your side.

The story behind the show

It’s a conversation we all have in the clubhouse. “Where is your favourite course? Which is your favourite hole?” But it just so happened that this conversation was at Wentworth with former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley. He’s played all over the world in some of the biggest tournaments and designed a few courses too. So, he should know!

So, he started plotting this golfing expedition and they had anywhere in the world to begin their journey but just like his career he wanted to start in the island of Ireland. And what a journey it turned out to be. From the most northern spot of the island of Ireland, Donegal, south to Kinsale, as far west as Belmullet and East as Downpatrick.

Following the success of Series 1, the pair are heading to Paul's "home from home" in mainland Europe, Portugal. Each episode will feature holes selected by Paul for their framing, architecture, and natural beauty. From the rugged terrain of Porto in the north to the sun-drenched coastal playground of the Algarve, Golf's Greatest Holes offers an immersive experience of Portugal’s broad variety of championship-quality golf courses.

Next up, Chris visits Quinta da Ria, a popular course about forty-five minutes from Faro airport. At this beautiful course, right by the sea, Chris plays the 12th hole, a par 3.

Chris doesn’t travel far to the next course, Pestana Gramacho, where he plays the 10th hole, a par 3. This tranquil place, full of ancient trees and wonderful wildlife, offers Chris a chance to relax and unwind. To conclude the episode, Paul plays the 16th hole at the world-famous Quinta do Lago South, one of the most prestigious golf courses in all of Portugal.

Episode 2

Episode Two starts at Salgados in the Algarve, where Chris plays the 7th hole, a par 4. Chris enjoys a wonderful afternoon in the sunshine as he takes on the palm-lined course. Next up is Dom Pedro Old Course, Paul and Chris meet up to play this stunning course. With its wonderful old trees lining the fairways and protecting the greens, Chris and Paul play the tough 4th hole, an enjoyable par 3, where Paul gets a birdie.

Chris leaves Paul for the afternoon and heads off to Amendoeira, the Faldo course. He plays the 13th hole, a long par 5, on this prestigious course in the Algarve. Paul ends the episode playing Monte Rei, one of the best golf courses in Portugal, a Jack Nicklaus signature. Can Paul’s game match the surroundings, as he plays the 13th hole, a par 4?

Episode 3

The episode starts at Vale do Lobo, one of the most famous courses in Portugal. Chris and Paul play the 16th hole at the Royal course, which is intimidating thanks to its clifftop location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It doesn’t get any easier for Chris as he travels on to Pine Cliffs, where he plays the breath-taking 6th hole, a long Par 3 on the cliff’s edge - a hole that definitely isn't for the faint-hearted!

Located in a nature reserve, the next stop is the 3rd hole at Espiche Golf Club, where every effort has been taken to make this an environmentally and sustainably sound club. Paul finishes the episode at San Lorenzo, where he navigates the 7th hole, a tough par 4 by the estuary. As the sun sets, Paul takes in the nature and gentle waters of the estuary.

Episode 4

Paul and Chris start Episode Four at Quinta do Lago Laranjal in the Algarve, the newest of the three courses at Quinta do Lago. The duo play the 18th hole, an interesting risk-reward par 5, by the lake. Chris gets competitive with Paul, but will he succeed? After a wonderful morning, they head north towards Lisbon to play Troia. It’s the first course in Portugal that Paul ever played and they take on the incredible par 4 3rd hole on one of the toughest courses in the country.

Paul leaves Chris in Lisbon and travels to the Lisbon Sports Club, a traditional course, about 30 minutes’ drive from the city. Paul plays the 18th hole, a beautiful par 4 by the meandering stream. Does Paul stay out of the water?

Episode 5

Episode Five starts at Penha Longa, in the beautiful Cascais area. This hilltop course offers Paul and Chris, a chance to play the sixth hole, a dogleg par 4. Paul recounts his experiences playing in major competitions including a round with Seve Ballesteros.

Chris ventures north of Lisbon airport to Praia D’El Rey, a wonderful wild links course. The area, popular with surfers, is windswept and rugged with Chris playing the 13th hole, a tricky par 4. Finally, they head to Estoril, one of the oldest courses in Portugal. Paul and Chris play the 6th hole, a par 5, an uphill hole beautifully lined by traditional trees. To finish a wonderful day, Paul and Chris have a 007 cocktail in the Spies Bar at the Hotel Estoril in Cascais, famous for being the inspiration for the James Bond novels.
