Woolgar wins PGA Europro Tour Sweetspot Classic

Sweetspot Classic

George Woolgar won the Sweetspot Classic with a 54-hole score of seven under par at Longhirst Hall, his second PGA EuroPro Tour victory and his first of the season.

The Chesterfield golfer shot a final-round 68, two under, to win by one from three golfers who tied for second. They were Colm Moriarty, who bogeyed the par-five 18th to sign for a 72, Zack Saltman, who set the course record with a 63 in the first round, and 2012 PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit winner Paul Maddy, who shot a superb final-round 64 to move from level par to six under for the week.

Woolgar was victorious at Frilford Heath last year but had been dogged by injury since, only returning to action in May.

“It was a long nine months after winning at Frilford last summer,” he said. “It was a bit of a rollercoaster but that is in the past now and I have come back, been consistent and now I want to kick on from here and let’s see what happens.

“I didn’t see a leaderboard after the 15th so I didn’t know my position, but I knew I needed to press on and try and get some birdies on the last couple of holes. That didn’t quite happen but the pars were a good score in the end and I won and got the job done.”

Woolgar was consistent all week, with rounds of 67, 68 and 68 taking him to seven under and first place, earning himself a £10,000 winner’s cheque and a brand new Motocaddy trolley.

With only two cuts missed all season, and a tied second at Collingtree Park in June, Woolgar now leads the Order of Merit.

Back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18 cost Irishman Moriarty, who led by one ahead of the final round. Zack Saltman shot a final-round 70 to join Moriarty and Maddy in a tie for second.

A two-hour highlights package of the Sweetspot Classic will air on Sky Sports HD on Tuesday, August 27, repeated three times on Wednesday, August 28.

The next PGA EuroPro Tour event is the HotelPlanner.com Championship at Dale Hill in East Sussex, beginning on Wednesday, August 21 and concluding Friday, August 23.
